Creating a Life of Meaning

This week’s study of Randy Pausch’s Last Lecture was both inspiring and humbling. I believe one of the primary reasons Randy Pausch was able to achieve many of his childhood dreams was his unique combination of persistence, optimism, and creativity. He didn’t just stop when he encountered an obstacle; he looked for another way around it. He also emphasized the importance of “brick walls,” which exist not to keep us out, but to test how badly we want something. This mindset gave him the resilience to pursue his dreams with determination and joy, even when the path was not easy.

When I was younger, I did not have dreams. I was living life one day at a time, doing what everyone else was doing, with no bigger goals besides finishing basic school and getting married. It was not until I joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that my perspective changed. The teachings of the gospel opened my mind to a whole new world of possibilities I did not know existed. Opportunities began to come one after another. I married a man who wanted to prosper, and he taught me that everything was created for us to succeed if we desired it and worked for it, with the vision of glorifying the kingdom of God.

One of his dreams was to own and operate a restaurant. Initially, I helped him reach his goal while he supported me in mine, enabling me to continue my education. But as we worked side by side, I discovered that I enjoyed running a business. I appreciated the challenges it presents and the way it encouraged me to grow. What began as his dream became a shared dream, and now it is also part of my own vision for the future.

Another important part of my journey has been my education. Completing my bachelor’s degree has been a personal goal that I have pursued alongside running the restaurant. Balancing school and business is challenging, but it has taught me discipline, resilience, and the joy of achieving milestones that matter to me. This goal reminds me that a meaningful life is not just about reaching someone else’s dream. It is also about nurturing our own growth and aspirations.

From this week’s study, one of the lessons that stood out the most is that meaning comes from pursuing goals that align with our values. Dreaming is important because it gives us direction and purpose. My journey has shown me that even if we start without dreams, it is never too late to begin. With God’s guidance, hard work, and vision, we can turn opportunities into a meaningful life.
